>Japan Crisis: The Industry

12 03 2011

>At 2:46PM local time, a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the coast just of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. After that followed large walls of water, which battered down on Japan, as well as serious aftershocks.
But how has this affected the gaming and technology industry?

Were the developers affected by the earthquake and tsunami?

There have been no reports of building destruction that affected the gaming and technology industry after the tsunami and earthquake.

Are the developers doing anything to help?

They sure are. Nintendo are giving away ¥300,000,000, SEGA is donating ¥200,000,000, Namco Bandai is giving ¥100,000,000, while Tecmo Koei are donating ¥10,000,00 to the Japanese Red Cross. Apart from a ¥300,000,000 donation, Sony will give out 30,000 radios to people affected.

The 25th Game Developers Conference (GDC, for short) wrapped up on Friday. If you are not familiar with the event, the website describes it as “the world’s largest professionals-only game industry event”.

Anyway, lots of new gaming & tech related news came out of the conference, and so we have made a list of all the big going-ons at the conference.

Nintendo unveiled some details about a new Mario game for the 3DS. The logo seems to have a tail, resembling that Racoon Mario or Tanooki Mario may return. They also showed four screenshots, with the levels being similar to Super Mario Galaxy 2, and some like Super Mario Bros. 3. We’ll have to wait until E3 in June for more….

Electronic Arts released this Battlefield 3 trailer. It looks EPIC
Activision & Bungie have confirmed that they are working on a MMO, which, for once is not fighting related…

But the best news was Apple with the iPad 2. OMG, it has a camera! All that we know is available here.

What did you think of the GDC news? Have your say down the bottom!
